We’re still following the funeral procession that was the Full Moon in Scorpio and Saturn has today slammed on the breaks, just days before Venus & Jupiter. In a few days 4 planets will be retrograde. This week will likely throw us for a loop. Think of it like being in a car going around a corner at high speed; don’t try to push against it, lean in & trust your instincts. Find your flow.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Moon in Capricorn is snuggling up to Pluto all day today making sure to rattle any cobwebs of grief & uncertainty you were hoping to ignore.
Lean in. Listen. Watch carefully. Whatever is taking flight right now will likely land as a message further along the road. 💫
I’ve been thinking about this time that we’re all experiencing together in terms of incubation. It reminds us that while it may appear like we’re doing nothing in the eyes of capitalism, we’re actively nurturing the new world into existence. Incubation allows us to observe the destruction that capitalism has on this living, breathing organism we exist on, as well as the bodies we exist within.
The world over, we’re being forced to do the exact same thing. This virus, like Aquarius, doesn’t discriminate. It takes everyone into consideration, everywhere. No one is spared. Therefore as we look at the world, and ourselves, from the inside out a consciousness shift is occurring. History shows us that major, fundamental changes in society, in how people think and what we think about is almost always accompanied by a collective event that forces the transmutation. It’s also often accompanied by great resistance from those who hold power.
This incubation means that Capitalisms’ biggest fear can be realised: when our forced participation is halted we have time and space to ask legitimate questions such as, “Why do we work to live and eat?” “Why are we contributing to systems that hurt us and the planet?” “How do we deconstruct the old and build a more inclusive, equitable, respectful new?” Whether you’re dependent on capitalism or capitalism is dependent on your poverty (financially, spiritually or mentally), the instability and inequality is being exposed and affecting everyone.
I love it when non-astrologers speak so precisely about astrology.
In her book “Becoming,” Michelle Obama gives us great insight into Barack’s 12th house Saturn. From the beginning of their relationship, it was clear to her that he was someone with a very rich inner world, and that this had very specific requirements.
Wherever they lived and travelled, a room or a nook would be carved out for his “Hole”, where he processed, worked through books, newspapers, ideas and had the necessary space to himself to churn through it all, uninterrupted.
Anyone with 12th house planets knows of this notoriously difficult terrain. Anyone with Aquarius Rising is right now getting a pretty clear idea about it. Often called the house of ‘self-undoing,’ there are few interpretations of this area of the sky that would ever make it prime real estate. It’s that house out in the country that’s always for sale. It has an air about it that you can’t quite put your finger on, but when you walk inside you’re very aware that it could swallow you up and no one would think to look for you there. It is mysterious and difficult to grasp.
The 12th house, or 12th sign from the Ascendant, is the last to have risen and therefore is the one with the greatest journey ahead of it. Any planets in this area of the chart were rising when the individual (or event) was being born, having ascended from the deepest, most personal and primal part of the sky into full view, adding extra-extra to its influence in the life.
The 12th house is where planets get to test the waters of expression with the naivety and inexperience of anything young and fresh. It’s new, and deeply uncertain. The depth of vulnerability here can often result in retracting these energies inward, calling forth privacy and self imposed isolation. Sometimes though, these energies are nurtured in family environments and these planets become a great source of power in an individuals life.
The 12th house is also often aligned with secrets and hidden enemies. In the case where these energies are not supported in the early life, part of the self is retracted from view, becoming something hidden and secretive. Pushed down deep enough it becomes repressed and bent out of shape, potentially resulting in either illness or other people representing the very characteristics consciously, or subconsciously, buried.
As Rob Hand says, planets in the 12th house “confine one by working against one’s expression. They undermine one’s ego because they are denied by it.” As with most things in life, astrology is not black and white; the grey areas can encompass a bit of both in alternating measure at different times.
As Barack Obama worked his way through Law school he remained tightly connected to various community initiatives; he allowed his Saturn to work for him. His 12th house Saturn required an outlet that allowed him to be part of the greater whole, of service to those he saw himself reflected in, placing him in situations where he could learn to understand and develop his relationship with authority in an egoless manner.
Establishing physical space where he could study, process and be uninterrupted allowed him what he needed to create internal structure so he could be effectual externally. As Michelle Obama so eloquently says, “For him, the Hole is a kind of sacred high place, where insights are birthed and clarity comes to visit.”
With all that heteronormcore tells us about what we should and shouldn’t expect in relationships, people often feel inhibited to ask for space, or to live or sleep separately. 12th house planets, however, demand attention at the inner level. Without this space and time alone projection can become a serious issue. Choosing a partner who is a pilot or a sailor, someone who is gone for long stretches of time can loosen these stressors, or like Michelle and Barack, sometimes it takes time to establish the parameters of what does and doesn’t work. Relationship or not, 12th house placements take yeeeeaaars to understand and unravel.
“Barack, I’ve come to understand, is the sort of person who needs a hole, a closed-off little warren where he can read and write undisturbed. It’s like a hatch that opens directly onto the spacious skies of his brain. Time spent there seems to fuel him.”
Mercury Retrograde cycles coincide with large numbers of people going offline for a short term reset-detox. It makes sense considering Mercury is the messenger of the cosmos, retrograde periods call us to review, revisit, reset and technology pervades most aspects of daily life.
October 30th, 2019 Mercury digs in its heels and stations at the 28th degree of Scorpio, or the 238th degree of the Zodiac. It will retrograde back to the 12th degree of Scorpio on November 19th. That’s 20 days for you to detox, to call back your inspiration, assess any unhealthy patterns and reset boundaries. The Phoenix you choose to rise as depends on how deep you want to go. It’s your call and you are your only judge.
For the duration of this Mercury Retrograde period I’ll be here offering Merc Perk detox tips, decoding the messages from the Cosmos and watching how the planetary configurations play out on the world stage. It’s a process of slowing down, being present, re-empowering ourselves and consciously composting what needs to be released.
Life is just one continuous transition. There are no breaks & not one single destination. Even the ‘breaks’ are stations reorienting us from one point to the next…to the next…
There’s a lot of activity in the sky this week that can stir up lots of feels & frustrations. There’s also the desire to make sense of the most recent Mercury Retrograde cloud that passed through & hung heavy.
Being at the halfway point of this years Eclipse Seasons we have lights illuminating the road both back & forth. When / if the heavy feels land, take them as a sign post for things that are amidst transition ~ we need to create space for the new to come in by acknowledging & releasing the old.
Control is an illusion that keeps us in stuck states, so denying ourselves direct contact with our vulnerabilities & sensitivity can only create frustrating road blocks. There’s no hurry & nowhere to go!
This recent Mercury Rx cycle ended with the messenger snuggled up to mystical, nebulous Neptune. If retrograde times themselves aren’t enough to throw us off, sealing the deal with Neptune only intensified this.
The effects continuing this week have left many of us feeling cloudy & indecisive while lacking vitality & clear direction. Sound familiar? 🤔
It’s these moments, these potent astrological signatures, that are clear cosmic reminders that Capitalism is man-made & intrusive on our natural rhythms. The desire to achieve, to strive for survival is innate, but aligning our worth with ‘success’ & ‘progress’ is not. Why is it so hard to rest & DO nothing? How much did you push against this tide, only to feel more confused & dissatisfied? When we DO nothing, the only thing we can ‘do’ is just be. It’s in these precious moments that we can truly hear the messages.
If we lived in a society where we were encouraged to make our life’s work something we’re good at or enjoy, the very fabric of society would be different. We would ‘work’ because we enjoy it, because it’s fulfilling, because we’re contributing. We would ‘work’ to our abilities, not a stock standard that exhausts us & pits us against each other. We wouldn’t have to stop & create time to check in, we’d be an expression of the rhythm of life itself. The indoctrination that we need to work to eat, to survive, to feel worthy are the sharp teeth of capitalism that eat away at our vitality & take us away from what we’re here to share.
We’re not out of this shadow phase until April 17, so these learnings are still being filtered through. With Saturn & Pluto as watchdogs over the south node traveling through Capricorn, we’re shedding more than the ideologies of capitalism. We have to address our own fears, our own beliefs & support of systems that uphold the things that inevitably hurt us.
Neptune allows us to view the ideal, to quest back to source. While it might not change overnight, each choice we make alters the entire vibration of the Universe. How’s THAT for personal responsibility?
Driving into the heart of this continent is nothing short of Epic. A 5 day drive that my Sagittarian feet would far prefer to walk, but are not genetically designed to do, took us from the waves lapping at the ocean shore to the fossilised rock that is the ancient sea bed. I love the desert for so many reasons; the silence, the expanse, the space, the lack of distraction that initiates an acute awareness, the lack of water simultaneously present with its tangible memory. It’s impossible to hide from yourself because you are constantly reflected everywhere.
Uluru holds great cultural & spiritual significance to the Anangu people. It extends some 6000m below ground & towers 343m above us. It’s truly immense, awe inspiring & it feels like a giant crystal pulsating magnificence. I’m so deeply grateful to be here.
We arrived at the heart of this continent on the Leo Full Moon, the sign that rules the heart, on an eclipse that acts as a bridge. The Full Moon is technically in Leo, but eclipses are defined by the Nodes of the Moon, & those Nodes are well & truly dancing along the Cancer / Capricorn axis.
This bridge is an important one. As we hurtle along into 2019, we’re building toward a critical time that will peak in 2020. The unfolding that occurs will redefine how we understand security, home, connection & the ongoing impacts of our capitalistic cis-het-patriarchal white supremist ways. This final eclipse in Leo is a reminder to sink deeper into our hearts, to not indulge the mind & fear as much as we can compassion & renegotiation.
This intensity that buiilding has me moving deeper into silence & listening. I hope for you all through this #fullmoon that you don’t deny your uniqueness, that it leads you deeper into your heart & that you carry this energy with you through the challenges that lie ahead.
We are all these Sunflowers. We all have a physical manifestation that we move through the world with, and yet, there’s also a subtle vibration pouring from each of us at every moment.
THERE IS NO LADDER OF HIERARCHY IN CONSCIOUSNESS.
The psychic airs are so thick and heavy right now. It can feel so hard to push through the fear and sense of impending doom, wherever in the world we are. The more I sit in this heaviness, the more I’m drawn toward understanding consciousness. Not with the mind or intellect, in being.
Uranus in Taurus is offering us just this. Uranus is an agitator, an awakener, forever pushing us toward freedom. In this Taurus case, we’re being given the opportunity to free ourselves from habituation, from the limitation of the body and being tied to material concerns. That doesn’t mean we check out, stop giving a shit, stop wearing clothes and give away all our money (though you can if that’s your jam.)
It means something different for everyone, but the vehicle that gets us there is very simple: listen to your own needs, your own inner dialogue and have boundaries that shield you from being saturated by the outside noise. Make space for your divine sound to pour forth and change this dominant, fear-based narrative.
Taurus gets comfortable. It loves a groove…but grooves become ruts which become trenches that we find hard to dig ourselves out of. We’re all being uprooted. We’re all re-evaluating our worth and what we invest time, energy and money into. It doesn’t make sense that the structures that support us also undermine us. This change is destabilizing and necessary. Look to what you’re clinging to and what’s being challenged to change.
The noise in the world, on social media is SO. LOUD. It doesn’t matter if it’s from the left or the right, red or blue, Liberal – National – Labour – everyone’s yelling. Make space for your Sunflower sound. Plug in and let it out.
Look around to see what is dead or dying. The Venus Retrograde cycle is no joke, and Scorpio does not suffer fools.
The Venus Rx cycle is a 40 day – 40 night dark night of the soul journey. It’s a fasting and a detox of our values, our relationships, the people and places we’ve poured our love and money and support into…and the stench of death and decay is wafting through.
What once brought us joy, vitality and purpose may now be a shell of its former self. We may also find, if we care to have that honest, penetrating look at ourselves, that we’ve outgrown parts of ourselves and moved on, but the situation remains; the vase is still holding up the dead flowers, but no amount of water is going to breathe life back into them.
Encompassed in this current Rx cycle is Neptune at the midpoint of its journey through Pisces, and Uranus at the midpoint of the Nodes. Midpoints are a peak of energy where we can look both back and forth; familiar enough with the energy at this stage that we know the pattern, but also aware that maturity beckons in our choices.
